It was cool and sunny in Wilmington, North Carolina on Valentine’s Day, February 14, 2017. A doctor entered the office of Republican Senator Richard Burr dressed in a white lab coat. The doctor was not there to check on the senator’s health but rather to protect the health of his constituents. What worried the doctor that day was a proposal, backed by Senator Burr and most GOP members of congress, to repeal the Affordable Care Act. The doctor was aware of what the ACA meant to North Carolina families. Without it, many would be unable to afford insurance while others would be barred from obtaining coverage due to a pre-existing condition. Repeal would bring about a return to the bad old days when people put off treatment and emergency rooms were packed with the uninsured. February 14, 2017 was the day that the doctor began her transition from a practicing physician to an activist. Exactly one year later, on Valentine’s Day of 2018, the doctor officially filed to run for the US House of Representatives in North Carolina’s 7th district.

For Dr. Kyle, it’s all about restoring America's health. A healthy nation is one where quality, affordable health care is available to all citizens. A healthy nation recognizes that its children are its future and supports education accordingly. A healthy nation is one where students can fret about their grades without fearing for their lives. A healthy nation is one where all workers earn a living wage no matter where they work or what they do. A healthy nation is one where the environment is clean and the water is pure. A healthy nation has pristine beaches and horizons free of oil drilling platforms. A healthy nation has fair elections and impartially drawn districts. A healthy nation is one where justice isn't only for those who can afford it. And a healthy nation provides its veterans with the services and respect they deserve. A healthy nation is not a place where the well-being of its citizens is sacrificed to provide tax cuts for its wealthiest inhabitants. Leaders in Washington have made a mess of things. Our democracy is at risk and the welfare of our citizenry is in peril. As our planet heats up, we are rapidly approaching the point of no return. Time and time again, Republicans in congress have failed to step up, instead deferring to a corrupt administration that chooses to ignore the weakening vital signs of our nation and the world beyond. It's time for a change. You trust your doctor. This fall, let's all put our trust in Dr. Kyle Horton to restore the health of our nation and the well-being of its citizens.
